internal medicine
a unique perspective
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) plays a holistic role in the diagnosis and treatment of internal medicine by emphasizing the balance of body, mind, and spirit. TCM utilizes a comprehensive approach that considers the individual's unique constitution, lifestyle, and emotional well-being. Through methods such as acupuncture, herbal remedies, dietary therapy, and massage, TCM aims to address the root causes of illness rather than merely alleviating symptoms. By restoring harmony within the body, TCM enhances the body's natural healing processes, supports overall health, and provides an integrative perspective that complements Western medical practices. This blend of ancient wisdom and modern understanding allows for a more thorough and personalized treatment strategy, promoting long-lasting wellness.
the core
TCM Diagnosis: TCM diagnosis begins with an understanding of how diseases progress, drawing from classic texts like the Yellow Emperor's Classic, the Wen Bing (Warm Disease), and the Shang Han Lun (Cold Disease). These texts map out the typical patterns of illness.
The Ba Gang: The Eight Guiding Principles:
To understand the nature of an imbalance, TCM practitioners use the Ba Gang, or Eight
Principles. These principles act like a comprehensive checklist to categorize the fundamental characteristics of a health issue:
Yin or Yang: These principles are the basis for homeostasis and growth. Understanding which of the 2 principles a disease belongs to is the beginning of understanding its pathway to health. The following 6 principles are each divided into these 2 categories.
External or Internal: Did the problem originate from outside the body (like wind or cold) or from within (like emotions or organ imbalances)?
Hot or Cold: Does the condition manifest with signs of heat (like fever or redness) or cold (like chills or paleness)?
Excess or Deficient: Is the body experiencing an overactivity of something (excess) or a lack of something essential (deficiency, like Qi or Blood)?
Finding Balance Through Understanding:
By carefully evaluating a person's condition through the lens of the Eight Principles, a TCM practitioner gains a fundamental understanding of the underlying imbalances. This understanding then guides the selection of appropriate TCM treatments to restore harmony within the body.
TCM's Broad Application:
Once the basics of dis-ease is uncovered, the practitioner will look at How the Five elements are working with or against one another. They will look to see which of the 4 level of the body is affected: The wei(immunity), qi(energetic), ying(nutritive) or xue(blood). This holistic approach allows TCM practitioners to use herbs and acupuncture to address a wide spectrum of internal health concerns, such as headaches, vertigo, colds and flus, digestive issues, and immune system disruptions, and much more.
A Complementary Approach:
TCM offers a unique perspective on health and well-being that can be a valuable addition to your overall healthcare. It may provide different ways of understanding and addressing health challenges compared to conventional medicine. We're also happy to work alongside your current doctors to support your health journey.
Essentially, TCM uses a systematic and time-tested method of understanding the body's imbalances through fundamental principles. This allows practitioners to tailor treatments toaddress the root cause of various health issues, often in a way that complements other medical approaches.
